Professional growth in occupational therapy is multi-faceted—it is shaped by physical health, intellectual curiosity, emotional intelligence, ethical grounding, and a commitment to service. My Better Me: Better World project is the Occupational Therapy Toolset. This project was designed as a structured, 18-week personal and professional development initiative that integrates these five domains into one cohesive, measurable plan. Rather than focusing on a single area of improvement, this program recognizes that effective, ethical, and evidence-based occupational therapy practice begins with the practitioner.
At its core, the program blends personal wellness with clinical excellence. My physical development component emphasized weight loss, muscle building, and consistent exercise—not for aesthetics, but to model healthy behaviors for clients. As occupational therapy practitioners often encourage lifestyle change, this program prioritizes leading by example. The structured progression from three days of exercise per week to five days, including high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and hiking, reflects both habit formation and graded challenge—principles deeply aligned with occupational therapy practice itself.
The intellectual pillar of the program focuses on research and evidence-based practice, a foundational expectation in modern healthcare. Each week, five occupational therapy interventions were researched, paired with supporting evidence, and accompanied by sample documentation. Over 18 weeks, this results in a robust, practitioner-friendly compilation of interventions that can be directly applied in clinical settings. The program prioritizes efficiency and accessibility—organizing research and documentation examples in a format that peers can readily use. This not only strengthens individual clinical reasoning but also contributes to improved productivity and consistency across a therapy team.
Equally vital is the program’s emphasis on emotional intelligence. By intentionally selecting and working through a text focused on emotional awareness and interpersonal understanding, the program acknowledges that technical skill alone is insufficient in therapeutic practice. Emotional intelligence enhances therapeutic rapport, improves client-centered care, and supports collaboration with colleagues and interdisciplinary teams. The structured reading schedule and reflection process ensure that emotional growth is intentional, progressive, and directly applicable to the work environment.
Ethics serve as the program’s stabilizing force. Revisiting and revising a personal philosophy of practice ensures that all growth—physical, intellectual, and emotional—remains anchored in professional and personal ethical standards. This reflective practice reinforces accountability, integrity, and alignment with the core values of occupational therapy, particularly when balancing productivity demands with client-centered care.
Finally, the program is grounded in service to others. While personal development is a primary motivator and initial step, the ultimate goal is much broader. Clients benefit from interventions rooted in current evidence while being delivered by a practitioner who models healthy habits and emotional awareness. Colleagues benefit from shared resources that reduce redundancy, spark new treatment ideas, and streamline documentation. The program intentionally transforms individual growth into collective benefit.
